Photography - Ray Galea
![]() | We now live in a time of tumultuous change on so many levels of society, particularly, photography. Advanced and affordable digital cameras have made pro-level creativity a possibility for countless individuals. But in photography, greatness is a quality more easily demonstrated than defined. Several fundamental factors must be taken in consideration to form the definition: intent, skill and consistency. The great photograph is no accident in the hands of an experienced photographer. |
![]() | From the time he began taking pictures seriously Ray Galea pursued photography with an all-embracing determination to explore the furthest aesthetic reaches of this medium. To this day, he loves photographs which are stronger than words - imagery capable of making dictators tumble. |
![]() | Ray Galea commenced photography studies at Sydney TAFE in the mid 1980s and began to feel this medium cuts deep beyond the myriad of answers which build on personal feelings. Years later he was appointed magazine editor by an established publishing house in Sydney. This availed him opportunities to utilise his basic skills and expand in photojournalistic themes. He learnt long ago to take heed the words of pioneering Australian photographer, Frank Hurley: “Near enough is not good enough.” |
![]() | “I was driven by the instinct that inspires the work of all those who make successful copy and photographic imagery.” Early 2006, Ray’s application to photography radically changed when he worked as a copywriter and photographer for an Australian company that specialises in electronic manufacturing of printed circuit boards. He was assigned to write text and create imagery for a new corporate website, plus marketing brochures. |
![]() | Believing the powers of observation can produce exceptional macro imagery, Ray adopted digital technology because it allowed him to replicate results using his superb lenses and forward imagery via e-mail for final approval. This diverse professional believes photography is not a matter of digital or film; black and white or colour – it is purely a choice and category specific. Experienced in the fields of abstract, macro, industrial, editorial, nature/landscape, architectural, portraiture including children, wedding and glamour photography, Ray enjoys creating imagery that provokes thought and evokes emotion. |
![]() | “Photography is integral to my consciousness – an obsession in the magic of making the picture. The greatest satisfaction I get from being a photographer comes from those unique moments of discovery when an image expands the boundaries of my vision and technique.” In 2009, Ray self-published two fine art photography books which are a compilation of his geographic and abstract work throughout a three-year period. There’s no question, these coffee-table books deserve attention. |
